Woodcarvings After I left art school I saw myself primarily as a woodcarver. I worked constantly on small pieces I could carry round with me, usually working up caricatured faces depicting a particular mood, often taking them overseas to carve as I travelled. Already very interested in social comment, I captured what I saw out in the world, in a small portable block of oak, or kauri. I used a favourite gouge which i eventually lost. I couldn't seem to release the figures from the wood with quite the same magic after that.
